Tailings-Dam-Management-and-the-Work-of-the-ICOLD-Technical-Committee-on-Tailings-Dams-and-Waste-Lagoons (UL, 8. december 2025)
Key points covered:
- SAFETY4TMF Project: A 2.5-year initiative under the Danube Region Program aimed at improving resilience, disaster preparedness, and safety for tailings management facilities (TMFs) in the Danube basin. The project addresses transnational risks, climate change impacts, and ecosystem-based approaches.
- ICOLD Technical Committee on Tailings Dams: Annika Westerfur, Chair of Committee L, presented the committee’s work, including the development of guidelines, bulletins, and training programs to improve tailings dam safety globally. She highlighted the importance of governance, design, construction, and operation in ensuring safe tailings management.
- Tailings Dam Design and Management: The presentation detailed the types of tailings dams (upstream, downstream, centerline), deposition methods, challenges in tailings management, and the importance of closure planning. Examples of tailings facilities in Sweden were discussed, along with global case studies of tailings dam failures, such as Brumadinho and San Marco. The webinar emphasized the importance of monitoring tailings dams due to their dynamic nature and the need for risk-based approaches in designing new facilities. The challenges of ensuring safe closure and creating value from closed tailings facilities were discussed, with examples of innovative post-closure uses of mining sites.
National Training Session organized by the University of Ljubljana within the framework of the SAFETY4TMF project was held on December 8, 2025 at 1 PM (CET). Guest speaker at the webinar was Annika Westerfur, Technical Director, Tailings Consultants Scandinavia AB and Chair of ICOLD Technical Committee L on Tailings Dams and Waste Lagoons.
The webinar focused on tailings dam management, disaster prevention, and the work of ICOLD’s Technical Committee on Tailings Dams and Waste Lagoons.
